1970-S Mint Proof Set
1970 was the last year of the 40% Silver Clad Half Dollars, but none were released into circulation. To obtain a 1970 Half Dollar from any of the mints, collectors had to purchase either a 1970 Proof Set or a 1970 Mint Set. The appearance of two major Cent varieties (Large Date and Small Date) created additional interest in Proof Sets of this year.
Each set contained five coins: One example each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.
Mintage: 2,632,810 sets
The individual coins of the 1970-S Proof Set were placed into holes in a black plastic insert, then sealed in a two-piece, clear plastic case. The case was then inserted into a protective outer cover consisting of blue cardboard, imprinted with the words: "United States Proof Set • 1970."
